Saw this article on Murketing and I'm pretty bummed. Nike just handed a C&D to the owner of Mike 23.

Interesting stance for a brand that didn't seem to mind piggy-backing off the guys in Minor Threat. If you don't know what I'm talking about, read it here: http://www.boingboing.net/2005/06/29/minor-threat-vs-nike.html

Quik Launches Collection for Women With Long-Ass Press Release and You Tube Video
Looks like Roxy is all growns up.
First, I applaud Quiksilver for trying to expand in this direction. At the same time... damn, this is a large press release and the three* minute video of them building out the space isn't exactly exciting either. A little long for the a.d.d. generation, no?
This should be cool if it's followed up on. What I'd love to see is some sort of live camera of the space, like Surfline has for waves or some skateparks do. Show me what you got Quik!

Pro Surfer Signature Debit Cards
This is pretty smart marketing by the Space Coast Credit Union.

Am I the only person who didn't know CJ Hobgood and Lisa Anderson had debit cards with their images on them too?
Check out the release on Surfer's Village here.

Malakye Gets It Right With Office Booyz
Sometimes, those of us in the action sports industry think we're too cool for school and forget why we got into it in the first place... we actually enjoy skateboarding, snowboarding, freestyle scootering, stair-boarding, etc.
Malakye has not forgotten this and to celebrate the greatness of sitting at a desk and talking about limited edition socks all day from eesa, there is is Office Booyz.

I'll be traveling, so I can't make it to the comp, but I'd love to have entered the "most gray hairs" competition or "kit so rad you can't possibly back it up" event. Or just have fun drinking beers with people who realize we're really lucky to talk about limited edition socks all day. I'm just glad South of the North and Liv2Ride aren't on this coast.... otherwise I'd have to cancel my trip and show them how to throw down apres ski style.
Oh, and if you're looking for a job in the action sports industry, check out Malakye too. But be smart about it.... apply for jobs you're qualified for and if you're not, look at how to get qualified. You'll notice none of the jobs say "must be able to kickflip." Board skills are nice, but for these gigs, you need the mental tools too.

To Present Action Sports With Relevance, You Should Have an Action Sports Background
South of North just covered a fairly tame (could have been way more scathing) post about Steve Fischer being the Phil Mickelson of snowboarding. This comes on the heels of a very nice woman sending me info that was close to accurate about a great skateboarder, but just a little bit off... enough to make me laugh (she's one of the better PR people I've run across, so I won't call her out ;-).

Here's the deal. Jeep with their garage ads showing an old Burton Air from the early 90's in the garage, Honda Element with it's clueless "half-cab 540 comment" and other marketers (and media to some extent), just don't get it. When your features/ads/whatever are off, even just a little, we notice, mock and write you off.
It'd be the equivalent of me writing about a football game and saying a kicker shot come touchdowns for three points. Football fans know what I'm talking about, but don't I look a little bit silly?
There are a ton of marketing firms in action sports available for marketing consulting, not to mention a few bloggers like South of North. Pay the little extra to have your marketing dialed.
BTW- Know what would have made a great article, the Burton/Shaun comparison to Sims/Steve. That would have been worth reading.

Magic Hat #9

I recently got an email from the Magic Hat marketing department asking me to re-sign back up for their newsletter (I stopped because they don't sell in San Diego... or west of the Mississippi for that matter).
Well, I'm in New Jersey now, home of Nike's Danny Kass ;-), and as usual went to go buy some Magic Hat. Bought a lot actually, but I'll blog first about the one people seem to know best, Magic Hat #9.

It's good stuff. A little fruity, maybe apricoty, it's an almost pale ale that is easy to drink. One of the better things to come out of Vermont, along with eesa and the Rome SDS.
Look for me to blog more about Magic Hat before I'm back in SD.

Burton/Stratton “Kids Parkway”
Good post on Liv2Ride about something Burton Snowboards is doing.

I fully back this idea... keeps younger kids and their families out of the park and at the same time, teaches them not to be a danger when they're ready for the big time.
Oh, and it also builds affinity for Burton with the kids and their parents, who at the end of the day, are probably buying the boards.
