Laird Hamilton Paddles out with Oxbow in Santa Monica

If you're in Santa Monica in two weeks, go meet Laird. Oxbow is hosting a little event that should be a good time.

Not sure how this works versus his Steve & Barry's line.

“International Surfwear Company Oxbow Launches Brand in the U.S. with Autograph Signing by Big Wave Surfer Laird Hamilton”

On July 20, French surfwear company Oxbow is officially celebrating the launch of the brand into the U.S. The public will have a chance to meet the legendary big wave surfer for an autograph signing session, from 2 to 4pm at the Oxbow store location in Santa Monica.

“Oxbow has sponsored me for almost 20 years: from my first experimentations with speed sailing in Europe and tow-in surfing in Maui in 1990 to the millennium wave in Teahupoo in 2001, and today, I am very proud to be associated with the launch of Oxbow in the U.S.” explains Laird Hamilton.

Customers of the store will not only be given the one-time opportunity to meet Laird Hamilton, they will also enjoy 25 % off of all purchases made that day.

The Santa Monica location is the first Oxbow store to open in the United States. Located at 131 Broadway in Santa Monica, CA, near the Third Street Promenade, the store is within walking distance of the beach and at the center of shopping for residents and visitors, making it a prime location.

Localism is lame

http://www.asrtalkingheads.com/2008/03/localism-in-cab.html?cid=108958316#comment-108958316

I have fond memories of chasing kids from Smithtown away from the Taco Bell in Commack, because those were our curbs and if you didn't wax them, you couldn't ride them. And before Vernon Valley was Mountain Creek, if I caught you hitting my little side booter that I spent 30 minutes digging, I'd steal your ankle straps when you locked up your board for lunch.

Wait... I didn't do any of that. That'd be stupid.

I understand the notion of respecting people in the water and I realize how it can be annoying and/or dangerous when inexperienced riders get in the water. However, surfers should understand the idea that they don't own the oceans and didn't build the beaches.

I know this is a very unpopular stance and I'm ok with that. Feel free to disagree and be wrong.

Quik Launches Collection for Women With Long-Ass Press Release and You Tube Video

Looks like Roxy is all growns up.

First, I applaud Quiksilver for trying to expand in this direction. At the same time... damn, this is a large press release and the three* minute video of them building out the space isn't exactly exciting either. A little long for the a.d.d. generation, no?

This should be cool if it's followed up on. What I'd love to see is some sort of live camera of the space, like Surfline has for waves or some skateparks do. Show me what you got Quik!

Pro Surfer Signature Debit Cards

This is pretty smart marketing by the Space Coast Credit Union.

Am I the only person who didn't know CJ Hobgood and Lisa Anderson had debit cards with their images on them too?

Check out the release on Surfer's Village here.

Ultimate Boarder

Have you heard of the Ultimate Boarder competition?
The name sounds hokey, but a lot of the riders are legit.

The 'Squan's finest Shayne Posipil, element's Tosh, Aaron Astorga and Kurt Wastell are just some of the riders I'm stoked to check out.

Unfortunately, their site leaves a lot of info lacking (besides stats on how marketable action sports are today). Maybe they should reach out to one of those action sports PR firms and see if they can help get things going?

Pics from the Ultimate Boarder site.

Hollister Has New Competition - Steve & Barry's

Kids that don't surf have a new option besides Hollister. According to DNR, Steve & Barry's is launching a surf line with Laird Hamilton.

I'm torn on this. On one hand, they make affordable clothes, which is a good thing. On the other, they don't sponsor anyone in the industry (besides Laird), host events or give back to surf/skate/snow/hacky-sack in any way, shape or form, so the only people that benefit are Laird and S&B (besides the people who buy the clothes).

Without those brands driving and pushing the industry and its talent, action sports will start falling off again. After all, those jet skis that towed Laird into monster waves didn't sponsor themselves. I'm interested in seeing where this nets in two years.
